Confidence and trust are built from your words and actions. If you want to be a colleague that your team members can rely on, there are things you should say, and definitely some things you should NOT say. Communication for leadership success includes being aware of those phrases that turn people off.

Avoid these 10 phrases when trying to instill confidence in those around you.
1. "I don't know"
It's okay to admit that you don't have all the answers, but instead of saying "I don't know," try offering to find out or suggesting other potential solutions.
2. "That's not my problem"
Avoid passing the buck or shirking responsibility. Instead, try to find a way to contribute or offer to help find a solution.
3. "That's not fair"
Complaining about fairness can come across as unprofessional and may not be well-received by others. Instead, try to focus on finding a solution or addressing the issue at hand.
4. "That's not how we do things here"
Saying this can be seen as closed-minded and resistant to change. Instead, try to be open to new ideas and approaches, and consider the benefits and drawbacks of different approaches.
5. "I'm too busy"
Saying this can come across as uncooperative or unwilling to help. Instead, try to find a way to manage your workload and prioritize tasks.
6. "That's not my job"
Avoid being inflexible or unwilling to take on new tasks. Instead, try to be open to new challenges and opportunities to contribute to the team.
7. "That's not realistic"
Avoid being negative or pessimistic. Instead, try to find a way to make a plan or set goals that are achievable.
8. "That's not in my job description"
Avoid being inflexible or unwilling to take on new tasks. Instead, try to be open to new challenges and opportunities to contribute to the team.
9. "That's not how I was trained"
Avoid being resistant to change or new approaches. Instead, try to be open to learning and adapting to new situations.
10. "That's not possible"
Avoid being negative or pessimistic. Instead, try to find a way to make a plan or set goals that are achievable.
