We included José Andrés on our "Best Public Speakers" list because of his engaging and relatable presence, his passionate storytelling, clear and concise messaging, and excellent use of body language.

Jose Andrés is a Spanish-American chef, restauranteur and humanitarian, known as much for his James Beard Award winning food as for his work with the World Central Kitchen, a non-profit which provides meals in the wake of natural disasters and humanitarian crises. He is the recipient of the National Humanities Medal from the White House in 2016, honorary doctorates from Georgetown University, George Washington University and Harvard University, and served as co-chair of the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness and Nutrition during President Biden’s administration.
We reviewed Jose Andres’ interview on the Tonight Show for his personal, passionate delivery, relaxed presence, and colorful - yet precise - language. Andres’ is an expressive, gifted orator who balances serious topics with levity, charm, and spontaneity.
What are the main communication takeaways?
Engaging and Relatable Presence - José Andrés immediately establishes a sense of warmth and relatability. When he enters the stage, his smile and relaxed demeanor draw the audience in. His approach to communication isn’t rigid or formal, which allows him to connect easily with the viewers. He embodies this by leaning comfortably back in his chair, keeping his hand gestures active, and his maintaining his focus on Jimmy Fallon.
Passionate Storytelling - One of the most captivating aspects of José Andrés' appearance is his storytelling. Whether he's discussing his charitable work or his experiences with opening a new restaurant, he speaks with genuine passion. His enthusiasm is infectious, and he communicates his values clearly, weaving in personal anecdotes to make his points resonate. Andrés demonstrates this when he talks about his family and shares an anecdote about speaking at his daughters’ graduation. When he speaks about the work of his nonprofit, World Central Kitchen, he doesn’t just provide facts; he tells stories about the people he’s helped, the cultures he’s encountered, and the lives he’s touched. This storytelling makes his communication much more compelling, as it’s grounded in real-world experiences rather than abstract ideas.
Clear and Concise Messaging - José Andrés is able to express complex ideas in a simple, digestible manner. During his segment, he discusses important issues such as food insecurity and the role of chefs in alleviating global problems. While these topics can be heavy, he makes them approachable by framing them in concrete terms. His clarity and directness allow the audience to grasp the importance of his work without feeling overwhelmed or lost in jargon. This skill is particularly important when communicating to a broad, diverse audience with varying levels of familiarity with the subject matter.
How could he improve?
Pacing and Time Management - José Andrés, in his enthusiasm, sometimes covers a lot of ground in a short amount of time. While this is reflective of his passion, the pacing could be adjusted to ensure that each point is given its due attention. At times, jumping between different topics or anecdotes too quickly can leave some of his messages underexplored. A more deliberate pacing, with slight pauses to let key points settle, might help to increase the impact of his words, especially when discussing complex issues like food insecurity or his humanitarian work.
Clarifying Key Messages - While José Andrés is a passionate storyteller, at times his anecdotes can be packed with details that, while compelling, may distract from his core message. A bit more emphasis on the most important takeaways would ensure that viewers leave with a clearer understanding of what he wants to communicate. For example, when discussing World Central Kitchen, he could summarize his main points about its work more clearly—why it's needed, what people can do to help, and the tangible outcomes of the efforts. This could help create a stronger, more lasting takeaway for the audience.
